We all want our computers to be fast, or at least fast enough to allow us to do what we need to do without having to wait a long time for our programs to run.

However, over time, and especially with more-than-moderate usage, our computers tend to slow down, lag, freeze up, and just start acting as if they need to be repaired or replaced.

Before you take your computer to the repair shop, or dump it altogether for a newer model, try some of these PC optimization tips: they may make a night and day difference in your computer's speed and responsiveness.

Defragment Often

When you open and close files, download large or small files, or just use your computer for everyday tasks, your files become 'fragmented', and this fragmentation can cause your PC to slow down considerably.  

Windows has a built-in defragmentation tool for a reason -- use it every once in a while at least, and you'll likely notice that your computer is more responsive and overall faster.

Don't forget to reboot

Rebooting your computer can be likened to 'recharging' its energy.  Just as you need to sleep at night, your computer needs to 'reset' itself every once in a while to operate at its peak capacity.

Depending on your setup, your programs, and your computer usage, you may have to reboot more often than others do, but try to reboot your computer at least a couple of times per week.

Turn off the indexing service

Turning off the indexing service is relatively easy, but as the instructions are operating system specific, you may have to search for the right instructions for your PC.

For Windows XP users, however -- just open your 'My Computer' folder, right-click on your local disk, which is usually C, when the window pops up, click on 'Properties' at the bottom, then when the Properties window opens, un-check the box at the bottom of the 'General' tab that reads, "Allow indexing service to index this disk ".

Then, reboot. To undo this change, just repeat the steps we outlined and be sure the box is checked instead of unchecked.

Upgrade your memory (RAM)

Your computer's memory can be likened to the amount of muscle that your PC has to perform the various functions that are required of it on a daily basis.

If your computer doesn't have enough memory, either to run the operating system that you're using, such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7, or it doesn't have enough memory to allow you to run applications that you use, you're going to notice that your computer is not running as fast as it should be.

While you probably won't experience system crashes, you will certainly notice a lag in performance.
Fortunately, memory upgrades are a cheap fix for computer users who want to optimize their PCs; it's a small, one-time cost that can produce long-term benefits of a faster computing experience.
